This week’s square is based on Crochet ‘N’ More’s Kaleidoscope Afghan Square. It features a new stitch for us: the long single crochet. Here is a photo of my square for this week:
The Pattern, With Tutorial Photos
I used a size H hook to complete this square. It measures 6 inches by 6 inches, as all squares will need to measure. Please select the appropriate size hook for your squares to measure 6 inches as well.
I used 2 colors (color A, B), so the pattern is written for 2 colors. If you use less/more colors, make the appropriate adjustments.
Abbreviations (for a tutorial of each stitch, see the links page in the menu):
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
lsc – long single crochet
dc – double crochet
To complete a long single crochet (lsc), insert your hook into the row (or 2, following the instructions) below the indicated stitch and pull up a loop. Yarn over the hook, and pull through both loops on your hook. This completes the long single crochet.
To begin, ch 8 with color A. Join to first ch with a sl st.
Round 1: Continuing with color A, ch 3, 19 dc into the loop. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3.
Round 2: Continuing with color A, ch 3. Dc in the stitch to the right of the beginning ch-3, ch 2. *Skip next stitch to the left of the beginning ch-3. Dc in next stitch, then dc in the stitch that you skipped. This makes a “cross stitch”. Ch 2.* Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3.
Round 3: Continuing with color A, ch 1. Sc in same stitch as joining. Work 2 sc in each ch-2 space and 1 sc in each dc around. Join with sl st to first sc.
Round 4: Continuing with color A, ch 3. (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same stitch as the beginning ch-3 (this makes the first corner). * 9 dc, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next sc (corner made).* Repeat from * 2 more times. 9 dc. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Round 5: With color B, join with a sl st in any corner space, ch 1. ^*3 sc, lsc at base of next stitch (in the row below).* Repeat from * 2 more times. 3 sc, (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in the corner.^ Repeat from ^ around. Join with sl st to first sc.
Round 6: Continuing with color B, ch 1. Sc in each stitch around, working 3 sc in each ch-2 corner space. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Round 7: With color A, join with a sl st in the center stitch of any corner. ^Lsc into 2 rows below corner sc. 4 sc, lsc into 2 rows below next stitch. *3 sc, lsc into 2 rows below next stitch.* Repeat from * 2 more times. 4 sc. Repeat from ^ around. Join with sl st to first sc. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Finishing: Weave in all ends, making sure that they are very secure. You do not want the ends to come unraveled when you wash the blanket. If you need help with weaving in the ends, check out the tutorial posted in the links page above.
