Week 7 – Dear Granny, With Love

So I’m still kinda stuck in the heart theme of Valentine’s Day.  Even though I didn’t have a valentine this year, I did get myself a box of chocolates 🙂  This week’s square includes 4 mini hearts in the pattern.  It is based on Amelia Beebe’s “Heart Stricken“.  Here is a photo of my completed square:

The Pattern, With Tutorial Photos

I used a size I hook to complete this square.  It measures 6 inches by 6 inches, as all squares will need to measure.  Please select the appropriate size hook for your squares to measure 6 inches as well.

I used 2 colors (color A and B), so the pattern is written for 2 colors.  If you use less/more colors, make the appropriate adjustments.

Abbreviations (for a tutorial of each stitch, see the links page in the menu):
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
ttc – triple treble crochet

This is not a popular stitch, so there aren’t many tutorials on it.  Here are the instructions in case you can’t find a good tutorial.
Triple Treble Crochet: Yarn over the hook 4 times.  Insert hook into desired stitch and yarn over the hook again.  Pull up a loop (there should be 6 loops on your hook).  Yarn over and pull through 2 loops, 5 times.

This pattern will also require you to crochet in the back loops only, and then in the front loops only.  If you need help with this, please visit the links page.

To begin, ch 4 with color A.  Join to first ch with a sl st.  Color A is the color of the hearts in the center of the square.

Round 1: Continuing with color A, ch 1, 8 sc into loop.  Join with sl st to first sc.

On Round 2, there were 4 stitches where you worked in the back loops only.  This leaves the front loops open, and this is where you will work the ttc of Round 4.

Round 4: With color B, join with a sl st to the first ch-3 space of Round 3.  Ch 3, (2dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the ch-3 space.  Ch 1, skip next 3 stitches.  1 ttc in front loop of Round 2 below.  1 dc in next ch-1 space.  1 ttc in front loop of Round 2 below.

Finishing: Weave in all ends, making sure that they are very secure.  You do not want the ends to come unraveled when you wash the blanket.  If you need help with weaving in the ends, check out the tutorial posted in the links page above.

Feel free to send a photo of your finished square to littlebirdknits0@gmail.com to have it added to the photos page.
